Since breaking ground in 2011, the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines has made remarkable symbolic achievements.

In November 2011, the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines undertaken by the leading enterprise in the internal combustion engine industry--Yuchai Group was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). After two years' construction, the laboratory was accepted in July 2014. Thus, China's highest-grade internal combustion engine R & D platform emerged in Yuchai.

From building a domestic first-class R & D institution to developing generic and key industrial technologies, to forming and popularizing innovative achievements with independent intellectual property right, to working out industrial technical routes and standards, and improving the overall technical level of China's internal combustion engines, Yuchai has been committed to

building the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines into an advanced R & D base as well as a platform for transformation and engineering application of achievements built for the internal combustion engine industry.

On the road of independent innovation, the laboratory is forging ahead with the mission of serving the internal combustion engine industry and the ambition of leading the future.

Settle in Yuchai

As a basic industry providing main power equipment to industries such as transportation, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, fishing vessels and defense equipment, the internal combustion engine industry is self-evidently important.

However, due to lack of core technologies and unsoundness of the energy conservation and emission reduction standard system, China's internal combustion engines remain far behind in terms of energy conservation and environmental protection indicators, and high-energy-conserving, high-emission and low-performance internal combustion engines are still used extensively.

China urgently needs to resolve environmental problems, but is still controlled by other countries in terms of core technologies.

To develop generic and key industrial technologies, it is imminent to independently develop energy-conserving and environment-friendly engines.

The Opinion of the General Office of the State Council on Intensifying Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction in the Internal Combustion Engine Industry released in February 2013 noted that efforts should be made to "accelerate the R & D, application and industrialization of new energy conservation and emission reduction technologies of internal combustion engines, advance the diversified application of alternative energy for internal combustion engines, promote the development of remanufacturing, reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines, improve the energy conservation and emission reduction level of China's internal combustion engines and enhance the international competitiveness of China's internal combustion engine industry."

Innovation drive, action foremost.

In November 2011, upon approval by NDRC, the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines representing the highest level of China's internal combustion engine industry was undertaken by Yuchai Group.

NDRC made a prudential decision after evaluating Yuchai's comprehensive strength including research strength, ability to organize development and industrial influence

The laboratory will be a real open platform for technical R & D and achievement transformation targeting the industry, and will play a critical role in improving China's capacity for technical innovation of internal combustion engines and enhancing the core competitiveness of relevant industries. According to NDRC's official reply, the laboratory is aimed to build a highest-standard and highest-level domestic R & D institution to develop generic and key industrial technologies in such aspects as energy conservation and emission reduction, noise reduction, light weight and control, form and popularize innovative achievements with independent intellectual property right, work out industrial technical routes and standards, pioneer industrial technical progress, improve the overall technical level of China's internal combustion engines, narrow the technical gap with developed countries, and enhance the competitiveness of the internal combustion engine industry as well as national pillar industries such as the vehicle industry, construction machinery industry, agricultural machinery industry and ship industry in which internal combustion engines are used as the core component.

There are a lot of internal combustion engine manufacturers in China, why did the national engineering laboratory of internal combustion engines representing the highest level of China's internal combustion engine industry settle in Yuchai.

"The settlement of the national engineering laboratory in Yuchai is because that Yuchai has had the conditions and advantages for building the laboratory. This shows that the state highly trusts and recognizes Yuchai, and reflects Yuchai's technical leadership," said Yan Ping, chairman of Yuchai Group.

Every big tree takes deep roots. Yuchai emerged and thrived for engines. There is tremendous strength and backing for building the laboratory in Yuchai.

In terms of comprehensive strength, as China's largest internal combustion engine manufacturing base, Yuchai boasts a complete range of products, enjoys overwhelming comprehensive advantages in the domestic industry in such aspects as industrialization, technology, talent, research facilities, production, teaching and research cooperation, informatization, funds and management, and can offer strong support for building such a laboratory.

In terms of R & D strength, Yuchai has built the largest and best-equipped state-accredited corporate technical center and laboratory in the industry, owned a series of proprietary technologies and a top R & D team in the industry, and kept ahead in the industry in R & D strength.

In terms of product R & D, Yuchai developed National I to V diesel engines two to five years ahead of the implementation of the national emission standard, and took the lead to introduce the country's first Euro VI diesel engine sample in step with global engine R & D in June 2011. Besides, Yuchai engines served international sports events such as Beijing Olympic Games, Sochi Winter Olympic Games, Guangzhou Asian Games, Shenzhen Universiade and FIG World Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Nanning.

In terms of patents for invention, Yuchai applied for over 1,000 patents and won over 70% from 2006 to 2010, ranking first among Guangxi's enterprises for five consecutive years, and was listed among "national advanced collectives in patent work" in 2008.

Yuchai was approved to construct the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines, what will the laboratory be like? And how to construct it?

One must ascend in order to see far and must be outstanding in order to lead.

In the early days of laboratory construction, Yuchai Group proposed to invest nearly 100 million yuan and spend three year in giving full play to its comprehensive advantage as a national corporate technical center and a state-accredited laboratory, to build the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines on the basis of the existing Yulin R & D base and Nanning R & D base in accordance with the standard of "China number one, world number five". The laboratory's test and inspection equipment was mainly imported brands up to advanced international standards functionally such as AVL and HORIBO. Combined with complete means of testing, the laboratory meets the need for testing development processes of various domestic new engine product and technology, and is up to standards of national and international R & D centers.

Build a first-class base, train first-class talents.

Yuchai proposed that the laboratory should become a base targeting the internal combustion engine industry and integrating several "first-classes" after construction completion.

A first-class R & D and experimental base that increases product development efficiency by 20%, saves engine energy by 3% to 5% averagely, accomplishes an achievement transformation ratio and coverage of 50%, undertakes over 50 research projects every year including at least three national ones, applies for 150 patents every year, and makes all road engines up to National V emission standard and some up to Euro VI standards.

A first-class talent training base that takes technical development and project development as bond, and keeps optimizing the structure of laboratory staff by means of production, teaching and research cooperation, upstream and downstream enterprise cooperation and domestic counterpart cooperation, to form a talent team specializing in researches on core technology of internal combustion engines, boost the capacity for independent innovation and train and transfer talents to domestic universities, colleges and engineering laboratories.

A first-class industrialized base that establishes a mechanism of inter-enterprise and inter-industry cooperation, applies advanced technologies to the internal combustion engine industry and all relevant industries, intensifies the transformation and popularization of various R & D technologies, accomplishes the cycling of production, teaching, research and application, and makes China's technical strength of internal combustion engines up to advanced international standards and promotes the development of relevant industries by establishing industrial technical alliances through production, teaching and research cooperation, strengthening pilot capacity building, constructing R & D achievement demonstration bases, actively popularizing achievements, opening up emerging international markets and carrying out industrial technical exchanges and services.

With the objective of building a base targeting the internal combustion engine industry and integrating several "first-classes", Yuchai made all-out efforts to undertake the heavy task of constructing the National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines.

Strut stuff

Great virtue promotes growth, God rewards the diligent.

On July 15, 2014, entrusted by NDRC, the Guangxi Development and Reform Commission organized an expert committee to accept the construction project of "National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines" undertaken by Yuchai Group.

"The submitted project materials are complete and conform to the acceptance requirements," After investigating the laboratory's construction and operation, hearing the constructor's project acceptance report, project audit report and final accounting report, and examining relevant materials, upon inquiries and discussions, the expert committee formed the opinion on acceptance.

These are undoubtedly brilliant results:

Yuchai has constructed and perfected the Yulin R & D and test base. Yuchai employed the heavy engine test workshop and the gas engine test workshop in the Yulin base, Yuchai has built 12 test benches, including test platforms for heavy-duty engines and test platforms for vehicles and parts, developed the capacity for testing medium and high-speed large-power engines and national V gas (CNG, LNG) engines, and upgraded 12 engine performance benches and 9 reliability test benches.

Yuchai has built the Nanning R & D and test base. Yuchai has introduced Austria's advanced equipment such as AVL high-precision electric dynamometer, full-flow exhaust emission test system and noise source identification test system, built 14 test benches including hybrid power development platform, powertrain development platform, joint trial-manufacturing platform and auxiliary facilities, built a product trial-manufacturing center to improve the capacity for manufacturing new product parts, and purchased 158 units (sets) of equipment to improve the capacity for researching key generic technologies of internal combustion engines and the capacity for machinery development and matching.

In terms of technical innovation, the laboratory undertook 172 research projects during construction, including 4 major national projects and 12 provincial technical development projects; achieved breakthrough in generic technologies of energy conservation and emission reduction such as combustion technology, technology of waste heat and energy recovery and emission control technology, successfully developed the diesel engine specific to construction machinery up to the off-road Tier3 emission regulations for the first time, developed the capability of mass-manufacturing national V vehicle diesel engines, gas engines and marine engines, decreased fuel consumption and increased new products' rate of achievement transformation.

In terms of research achievements, Yuchai applied for 646 patents including 260 patents for invention; led the drafting of two national standards and participated in the drafting of 8 national standards; and led the drafting of 3 industrial standards and participated in the drafting of 10 industrial standards. These achievements have won two second national prizes for progress in science and technology, one first prize of Guangxi for progress in science and technology, and five other provincial and ministerial prizes.

In terms of talent construction, the laboratory has brought together 12 most outstanding academicians, experts and professors in domestic and overseas auto industries and related industrial fields to increase the total number of researchers and developers to 665, thus primarily building a high-caliber R & D team with strong innovation capacity, reasonable age and knowledge structure, and international vision.

Accumulate strength for future success.

In the context that world emission regulations and fuel consumption regulations have become increasingly rigorous, how does Yuchai's National Engineering Laboratory of High-efficiency, Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Internal Combustion Engines intensify researches on fields such as hybrid and electric drive, and how to enhance the core competitiveness of China's internal combustion engine technologies?

In the coming three years, the laboratory will conduct in-depth R & D in technical fields such as new concept combustion system, emission control, hybrid power and alternative fuel combustion to develop a series of independent and internationally advanced high-efficiency and environment-friendly internal combustion engine products and technologies, apply these advanced technologies to the internal combustion engine industry and related industries, and intensify the achievement transformation, popularization and application of various R & D technologies, thus quickening the pace of Chinese internal combustion engines to overtake advanced international levels.

"In the next period, we will further increase the input in laboratory facilities for Euro VI emission regulations and off-road Tier 4 regulations in the next period. In terms of staff, we plan to increase the total number of developers and researchers by some 80 percent in three years," said Lin Zhiqiang, president of Yuchai R & D Center, adding that the laboratory will also make efforts in developing basic generic technologies such as electronic control high pressure common rail fuel system, and increase technical reserves in key parts of internal combustion engines.

The laboratory has established a mechanism of cooperation between enterprises and industries

"Cooperation has three parts: I Cooperation with upstream and downstream enterprises, including joint development with suppliers, and a lot of cooperative projects arising from new product demonstration or preparation; II Intensified cooperation between engine manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers in powertrain matching; III Cooperation with some research institutes in more fields," Lin said, adding that Yuchai will give full play to the role of the industrial platform. "We aim to break the current mode of following R & D taken by the internal combustion engine industry to form our own unique technical means and paths."

Lead industrial development.

It is foreseeable that the laboratory will not only promote the progress of Yuchai's engine technologies by virtue of Yuchai's heavy investment in such aspects as R & D, talent, technology and equipment, but also substantially benefit the construction of relevant industrial alliances and make China's internal combustion engine industry up to advanced international standards.

Yuchai will give full play to the laboratory's advantages in R & D and equipment, and combine the advantages with Yuchai's industry chain advantage, to further improve the laboratory's capability of providing R & D, design and service to the industrial cluster of internal combustion engine and parts, said Zhou Sunhai, vice president of Yuchai Group, adding Yuchai will take full advantage of the laboratory's R & D platform to enhance its R & D capacity and core competitiveness, thus achieving sustained and steady development.
