Yuchai initiates "second startup" against odds

The "Second Startup" & Strategic Plan Outline of Yuchai Group (2014-2018) has recently been released. Yuchai People has a new mission.

Duly adjust corporate development strategy

In October 2013, as the machines roared in the new planned zone of Baotou Equipment Manufacturing Park on the bank of the boundless Yellow River, the project of Baotou Beiben Yuchai Engine Co., Ltd. broke ground. The long-demonstrated and much-expected project was finally initiated, drawing wide attention in the auto industry.

The alliance of Yuchai and Beiben surfaced in 2012. In April 2012, Yan Ping, chairman of Yuchai Group, met with Zhang Guoqing, president of China North Industries Group Corporation. They talked about the development of China's auto industry and engine industry. As domestic automakers have kept building plants in association with foreign engine manufacturers, competition has become increasingly fierce in the domestic commercial vehicle industry, especially the domestic heavy-duty truck industry, competition from parts to vehicles has permeated into all links including manufacturing and sales, the entire market has been filled with smoke of gunpowder. The alliance of the domestic engine manufacturer Yuchai and the domestic vehicle manufacturer Beiben has become a choice of win-win.

After years' development, by shifting from "building plants close to vehicle plants" to "building plants matching vehicle plants", Yuchai has gradually found an industrial mode linked by capital and featuring mutual complementation of products. The investment mode is just "lean investment" as described by Yuchai's management and represents the transformation direction of Yuchai's outward development.

The transformation has kept influencing Yuchai's overall industrial layout. In an interview from People's Daily in 2014, Yan said Yuchai would adjust its strategic plan realistically, turn the pattern of six industrial sectors featuring "two product chains and several industrial clusters" into a new pattern of "two industrial chains and two service platforms", reposition its development mode, pool strength and resources, extend to the engine industry chain and the petrochemical industry chain, and vigorously develop its logistics service platform and financial service platform, thus building a highland for value

Of the two industrial chains mentioned by Yan, Yuchai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. is a chess piece of Yuchai in the energy chemical industry, and Yuchai Petronas High-grade Lubricants Co., Ltd. is the other. In the upstream sector of engine manufacturing, Yuchai has kept establishing industrial companies. As scattered pearls are strung together, these industrial companies have formed a brilliant industrial chain.

"Arouse" enterprise's fast response

How will an enterprise adjust itself after adjusting its development strategy? How will a giant turn around? Its response speed is the key.

In traditional organizational management, the mode of pyramid-structured hierarchical management cannot meet fast-growing market demand. With the mass use of computer information technology, communication has become more convenient and timely, and the information age has become. Enterprises must establish the mechanism of fast response.

December 16, 2013 saw a great move of Yuchai. To meet new challenges in the face of the new situation, Yuchai promptly adjusted its organization.

This was a massive organizational adjustment. Yuchai comprehensively standardized names of organizations and positions to resolve problems such as non-uniformity and confusion of names of Level-1 organizations and Level-2 organizations, reorganized departments based on the corporate strategic goal, uniformly operated effective resources on a platform and accumulated all strength in support of Yuchai's "second startup". The Marine Engine Department changed most significantly among all adjusted departments. Yuchai transferred the Marine Engine Development Institute of Yuchai R & D Center to the department, increased the number of its regions from five to eight, and merged Engine Plant 6 into the department. Thus, the department has acquired complete capabilities from production, R & D, sales to follow-up service, thus initially forming a corporate framework.

Tang Zuoxing, general manager of the Marine Engine Department, said, "The organizational adjustment is innovation in business management. Yuchai planned and adjusted the marine engine sector because it is optimistic about the prospect of the marine engine market and takes the move as the groundwork for achieving an annual sales volume of 100,000 units of marine engines in three years. After the adjustment, the department's R & D, technology, production and sales will be more professional, the staff's thinking will be easier to unify and resources will be easily to coordinate and arrange.

According to Shen Guang, manager of the Enterprise Management Department, the main purpose of the organizational adjustment is quickening the company's market response, further flattening organizations, and making the resource and functional layout more rational and internal collaboration more efficient. The adjustment will be of great significance to improving the company's manufacturing capacity, management and control capacity, and comprehensive competitiveness.

High-end talents support "second startup"

The past three decades saw "fevers of studying abroad" and "tides of returning". Now not only does China introduce overseas returnees, foreign experts also flock into China.

Yuchai's new manufacturing director Ichiho Yamada is just one of them. The grey-bearded Japanese expert originally worked at Honda, Japan, and his colleagues Kawakami Minoru and Seiwa Honda who originally worked at Toyota came earlier than him. They served Yuchai from 2013 to help Yuchai with lean manufacturing.

The Japanese experts improved Yuchai's production lines significantly. The heavy engine assembly section of Engine Plant 5 is orderly with more rational production line layout. Lately, the plant has even made room from the crowded workshop for a practical engine assembly training base for newcomers.

Overseas talent introduction is merely part of Yuchai's talent strategy. At the seminar on "second startup", Yan said Yuchai should make great efforts in talent reserves in the "second startup". The human resources reserves of Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd. are divided into two parts: I The company will recruit at least three high-level directors (quality director, financial director, human resources director) this year, which must be top experts in manufacturing from Fortune Global 500 at least. II The company will exceptionally promote a group of backup talents who were born in the 1980s and have worked at Yuchai for 5 to 10 years, and renovate talent training and assessment. Yuchai Group will focus on achieving a breakthrough in introducing and cultivating legal, financial, human resource and management talents, and boldly promote young cadres according to the clear objective of the "second startup" instead of selecting and appointing personnel in order of seniority.

Wang Chunfeng is just an exceptionally promoted young man. After working at the Manufacturing Technology Department for many years, she was promoted to assistant to Ichiho Yamada upon competition.

Thereupon people often saw the old-young match at the plant. Such a talent echelon is Yuchai's most precious wealth as well as its hope.
