Building "beautiful China" through technical innovation

At the NPC and CPPCC this year, "beautiful China" became a hot topic among deputies and members. As a practitioner in the engine industry, Yan Ping, a deputy to the NPC and chairman of Yuchai Group, paid close attention to it, too. Recently, he has given an interview about the topic, airing his opinion.

Q: In the recent decade, China's automobile industry has burgeoned, with its annual sales volume jumping to the world No. 1. But correspondingly, vehicle emission has been increasing year by year. The average annual number of hazy days in recent year has been 5 to 20 days than before, for which vehicle emission is blamed. Yuchai is the industrial leader and Yuchai engines are dubbed "Chinese green power". As the head, what do you think of reducing motor vehicle emission?

A: Vehicle emission is a national and global problem. Third fourths of China's annual freight volume is contributed by trucks powered by diesel engines. The huge market inventory of such trucks has led to the heavy consumption of oil resources. The internal combustion engine industry is a key energy consumer that has created the hugest potential for energy conservation and emission reduction. In terms of energy conservation and emission reduction, China's fuel consumption is around 15 percent higher than foreign level, but China's emission standards are one or two levels lower than foreign emission standards, thus energy conservation and emission reduction has become the only way to accomplish the sustainable development of a country. For this reason, emission control and upgrade targeting the whole country and industry should be the basis of China's working out measures and formulating policies. Particularly, the emission regulations and policies specific to commercial vehicles should be taken as the emphasis of motor vehicle emission control.

A: As we know, Yuchai has kept ahead in the industry and pioneered the implementation of industrial standards in every emission upgrade from National I to Euro VI, how did Yuchai achieve that?

A: Economic development should not be at the expense of environmental destruction. Technical innovation is the key to making China beautiful. Yuchai has a goal of being "the largest mobile pollution source controller". Since the end of the last century, Yuchai has been committed to researching on emission technology upgrading and invested heavily in product upgrading researches. The technical route of SCR post-processing control taken by Yuchai has pioneered the choice of routes of emission technology upgrading in China. China-made SCR post-processing products have been squeezing foreign products out of China. From National I to Euro VI, Yuchai has been on a par with its foreign peers after over ten years of development.

In January 2013, Yuchai's project of "Key Technologies and Industrialization of Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Engines" won the second national prize for progress in science and technology as a breakthrough made through a decade of efforts. The engines involved in the project have been launched, producing prominent effects of energy conservation and environmental protection. A supposed annual output of 510,000 such engines can reduce carbon oxide emission by 2.515 million tons, save fuel consumption by 800,000 tons and fuel cost by 5 billion yuan every year. Reduced carbon dioxide emission is equivalent to planting 157 million trees.

Q: Among Guangxi's first group of 100-billion-yuan industrial bases, how does Yuchai build the base?

A: Guangxi proposed to focus on the projects of "100-billion-yuan industries", "100-billion-yuan enterprises" and "100-billion-yuan parks" in the "twelfth five-year" plan. Among Guangxi's first group of 100-billion-yuan enterprises, Yuchai is capable of achieving the goal. During the "twelfth five-year" period, Yuchai has been working steadily towards the goal of building a "100-billion-yuan" enterprise, especially in technical development. Moreover, while introducing "100-billion-yuan" industrial bases, Guangxi has launched and implemented major technological projects in 100-billion-yuan industries. During project construction, as the only internal combustion engine R & D center in Guangxi, Yuchai has been committed to researching and developing advanced new series such as auto engine and high-standard off-road diesel engine. Meanwhile, Yuchai has undertaken the heavy task of building the national engineering laboratory of high-efficiency, energy-conserving and environment-friendly internal combustion engines.
