The opening ceremony of the joint laboratory co-founded by Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd was held on March 8. CCP executive deputy secretary of Tianjin University Yang Xianjin, vice president of Tianjin University Shu Gequn, chairman of Yuchai Group and chairman of Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd. Yan Ping with professors and graduate students of the state key laboratory of internal combustion engine combustion attended the ceremony. Yan Ping with a team visited the laboratory after the ceremony.  

CCP secretary of Tianjin University Liu Jianping met with Yan Ping before the ceremony. He introduced the history of Tianjin University and its research facilities, and congratulated the establishment of the joint lab. Yan Ping briefed Yuchai Group to the Liu Jianping. Both sides had deep discussions on exploring methods for university-enterprise cooperation and arrived at the preliminary new cooperative intention.  

Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd have maintained a close partnership since the beginning of 1970s. In 2007 based on the previous cooperation, the university signed a cooperation agreement with Guangxi Yuchai to build the state key laboratory of internal combustion engine combustion joint laboratory. Its main research directions include: the development of diesel engine combustion technology; the study of vibration and noise of diesel engine and auto NVH; the study of intake system of diesel engine.

The cooperation between Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai was started at the beginning of 1970s. At that time the composite combustion system invented by Academician Shi Shaoxi was promoted nationally and the Yulin Diesel Engine Plantthe predecessor of Yuchai Groupreleased the X105 series diesel engines applying the system. In 1992 professor Xu Sidu started cooperation with Guangxi Yuchai. In 1994, the university signed a cooperation agreement with Yuchai to set up the Yuchai Technology Development Department which operated until 2001. From 2002-2006, the university kept a close partnership with Guangxi Yuchai. In 2007, based on the previous cooperation, the university signed a cooperation agreement with Yuchai to build the state key laboratory of internal combustion engine of  Tianjin University Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd joint laboratory.

The collaboration between Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai does not only help Yuchai to upgrade its technology, but also adds an impetus to the development of the diesel engine industry. In early 1990s, prior to the implementation of state emission standards, the two sides had worked together to reduce the emission of diesel engines in order to allow Yuchai engines achieve the State I standard. On the turbocharger technology research, both parties worked together to resolve the problem of low-speed torque issue of YC6112ZLQ diesel engine that was imported by Yuchai. The technology was applied to the whole industry of China . In 2007, Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai took the lead in China to study the VNT turbocharger and developed the EGR technology to meet the need of State IV diesel engine system. In 2008, both parties carried out together the research of two-tier turbocharger technology and set up two-tier turbocharger diesel engine test-bed. The gas test-bed developed by Tianjin University was used for Yuchai for the first time to help develop new products, inspect production lines and test quality. Currently, the test-bed is applied by over 50 enterprises and institutes across the country. Regards to the VNT research, Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai initiated VNT study on sedan diesel engines. They solved the NVH performance optimization of 4F assembled in Hebei Shuanghuan SCEO autos that has been exported overseas.

Regards to high-level personnel training, since 2002, 3 post-doctorates from Tianjin University have been graduated from Yuchai postdoctoral workstation. Since 2003, a total of 4 PhD graduates have joined Yuchai after graduation from Tianjin University . They play an important role in Yuchai.  

The cooperation projects signed by Tianjin University and Guangxi Yuchai since 1994 were over 40 with a total funding of about 20 million Yuan according to report. Over the past several years, their cooperation has witnessed a better development. In 2008, both sides signed 4 cooperation projects with a total funding of 3.52 million Yuan.
