On November 26, Technical Development of Heavy Diesel Engines for Commercial Vehicles and Car Diesel Engine Development Technology, two 863 projects undertaken by Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd. (YM), passed the acceptance by the 863 modern transport technology office of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

863 Program, also known as national high-tech research development program, was put forward in March 1986. The program persists in the principle of finite goal, emphasis highlighting and has effectively promoted Chinas high-tech and industrial development. In the eleventh five-year period, the program focused on high-tech fields such as information technology, biological and pharmaceutical technology, new material technology, advanced manufacturing technology, advanced energy technology, resource environment technology, marine technology, modern agriculture technology, modern transport technology, and earth observation and navigation technology, and organized technical research and development in forms of subjects and projects.
Commissioned by the 863 modern transport technology office of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the office of major 863 projects of advanced technologies for automotive development organized experts to review the acceptance reports and relevant materials of the two projects, listened to reports by persons in charge, conducted field inspection and inquired into relevant issues. The expert group thought the research groups had provided complete acceptance data, finished prescribed tasks and met the requirements of project objectives and assessment targets, thus approving Yuchais two 863 projects by consensus.
The acceptance meeting concluded: the progress of Technical Development of Heavy Diesel Engines for Commercial Vehicles includes the R & D and industrialization of new-generation high-strength heavy diesel engines and their core parts electronic fuel injection monoblock pump and SCR catalyst; aiming at Chinas typical conditions such as low speed of city buses and high content of sulfur in fuel, SCR system explore faced problems and worked out innovative, practical and feasible solutions; the organization structure of integration of production, teaching with research and collaboration between upstream and downstream enterprises in projects has boosted work efficiency and overall project level. Car Diesel Engine Development Technology completed the development of YC4W110-40 car diesel engine and met the requirements of major technical targets of the project; focused on designing and developing the electronically-controlled high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system of car diesel engine, and assessed its reliability and durability; completed the development of the electronically-controlled unit (ECU) of electronically-controlled high-pressure common-rail car diesel engine, and accomplished electronic control of EGR, VNT, DPF and high-pressure common-rail fuel system; carried out matching development of cars carrying diesel engines, and passed National IV emission and vehicle tests with all test indicators up to requirements; the technology has applied for 21 patents and three patents for software copyright, and won 16, including two patents for invention.
Based on 6K diesel engines, Technical Development of Heavy Diesel Engines for Commercial Vehicles is a new heavy engine technology in the world and a new technology up to Euro VI emission standards, said Lin Zhiqiang, president of Yuchai Engineering Research Institute, adding its acceptance marks a major achievement of Yuchai in the field of technical development of heavy diesel engines and shows China has been in step with the worlds advanced technical level.
